The Greater Accra Region is set to undergo a significant illumination upgrade, with plans unveiled by the Regional Coordinating Council to install 25,000 new street lights. This initiative, announced by Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, aims to address the longstanding issue of poor visibility on many roads at night, a concern frequently raised by both motorists and residents.
During a recent town hall meeting, Minister Titus Glover highlighted that this lighting project is not only about improving road safety but also plays a crucial role in crime prevention. "Adequate lighting is a deterrent to criminal activities," he explained, emphasizing the government's commitment to enhancing security across the region.
The minister outlined the phased approach of this ambitious project. The first phase, completed in 2022, saw the distribution of 10,000 street lights. This was followed by an impressive 20,000 installations in 2023. The upcoming third phase, which will add 25,000 more lights, represents a significant scaling up of the initiative.
In an exciting development, Titus Glover revealed that the Regional Coordinating Council is exploring a partnership with a private company to implement solar-powered lighting along key routes. A pilot project is being considered for the Tema Motorway, potentially extending from Shiashie through the Airport and 37 Military Hospital to central Accra.
The minister also outlined plans for further expansions, including illuminating the N1 highway all the way to Weija Gbawe. Additional areas slated for improved lighting include the stretch from Achimota, encompassing the Overhead bridge, Forestry Commission, Achimota Police Station, and GIMPA, before turning towards Fiesta Royale.
This comprehensive lighting strategy demonstrates the government's multifaceted approach to urban development, addressing issues of safety, security, and infrastructure enhancement simultaneously. Residents of Greater Accra can look forward to brighter, safer streets in the near future.
