On my way to write my first paper this morning I came across this old lady with her load of ripped plantain. She sells roasted plantain, a.k.a "Kofi Broke man" behind our school.
1. It's not my natural self to ignore older persons with loads. I grew up in the village of Abura Edumfa where it was virtuous to help the old going or coming from their farms. So when I saw her from a far I didn't need a second thought so I brought out my phone and took a shot. From behind I just yanked the load up and she asked "who is this?" It's heavy.
2. Her height and complexion is just like my biological grandmother. And before I spotted her a thought of my late grandmother flashed through. I will do it anytime for anyone.
3. Why am I sharing?
I have quite a number of young people ( many of them in my age group) here who either claim I inspire them and their mentor or have sent me messages asking me to mentor them. Some even address me "Master Teacher". I am unable to reach them one-on-one so I demonstrate my teachings here. I think they need to know how I PRAY.
This is how I pray: I act out how I would want to be treated by society when I am old. It's how I also feed into the cosmos how my aging parents should be treated wherever they find themselves since I cannot be with them always to help them myself.
By this to I seek to repair the erosion of the link between the old and young of society. By this act she can no longer make a general statement that young people of today have lost their cultural ethics and ethos.
Again, such act does not have its authority in any of the imported organized religions; it's in the cultural ethos and ethics of my Ancestors.
