I was going to town with my supervisor to deliver some products to another company. We passed on an untarred road, and we saw that some labourers were working on it. The men stopped us and said that if we wanted to pass, then we had to pay some money. My supervisor tried to talk them out of their decision, but they would hear none of that. He could not understand why he had to pay money before he would be allowed to pass by. The men barricaded the way with a bicycle.
My supervisor decided to turn around and use another route, and just then, a taxi also arrived, wanting to pass that way. The men also told the driver the same thing, that he had to pay before they would allow him to go. He also didn't see the sense in it, and kept on telling the men to allow him to pass, but they didn't listen.
The driver got upset, but still tried to reason with them. He said that they do not own the road, therefore they had no right to collect any money from passers-by before they were allowed to go. He said they should do the work from their hearts, so that if someone is pleased with them, they would be rewarded with something small in appreciation for their efforts.
But it wasn't in their power to demand for money out of their own selfish interests. He demanded for the last time, that they should let him pass, but they refused, saying that they were also the "bosses and masters" of the place, and he was only a visitor, therefore what they demanded would prevail.
This remark angered the driver. He got down from his car, threw the bicycle aside and went straight to the men. He slapped both men, and it became an exchange of blows. He knocked their heads together and pushed them to the ground. One of the men realised he could not stand a chance in the fight, so he retreated.
He shouted out to his friend to forget about everything and allow the driver to pass, but the other man was resilient, saying that he would teach the driver a lesson. He also tried to slap the driver, but the driver dodged, and instead, he received some more slaps. He got a hard pummel in his tummy which sent him rolling on the ground.
The fight became fierce, and many people came around to help in restraining the men. The driver had to be held, and he calmed down. He got back into his car, and drove away, leaving the men ashamed and badly beaten. Ofui, next time.
