My Journey to Help Release My Classmate From Prison.

Writer: Maryam kobiahMaryam kobiah

I was at the Winneba Local Prison on Monday to start the process that will lead to the release of some prisoners who were fined for committing minor crimes but couldn't pay so they had to serve jail terms instead.

I was warmly welcomed by the prison officers and it turns out most of them are TroTro Diaries members. I told them about my intentions of releasing my classmate and other people who I can afford to pay their fine.

I requested for a list of people who they believe have good character but got there because they were at the wrong place and probably for the wrong reasons. They assured me they'd prepare the list as soon as possible and get back to me.

Before I left there, I decided to have some lunch at the prison officers' canteen but spotted 2 prisoners working at the canteen so I interacted with the one who came to serve the food I ordered for. He was physically challenged.

I asked him what brought him to jail and he recanted how he and his friend were caught for stealing someone's farm products but his friend's family was able to get a lawyer for him while his own family couldn't go that length since they are poor. So he was given a jail term for which he has already served 4 years.

Anyway apart from the officer you see in the picture with me. I'm taller than all the other officers there.
